Popular Edinburgh bar to shut down as cost of living crisis sends bills soaring

As more and more small businesses feel the pressure, Monty’s in Haymarket has announced they’ll be closing.

Since opening in 2016, the pub has become popular with both locals and visitors - though they now say the pandemic, combined with the rising cost of living has backed them into a corner. The bar hasn’t announced an official closing date yet, and will continue to serve ‘while supplies last’.

In an Instagram post, the bar announced: “Sad news klaxon.

“After almost six years of buildilng up our wee business, serving some of the best beers in town, an amazing selection of whiskies and local spirits, and some amazing products, I have to announce that Monty’s will be closing at the end of the month.

“Unfortunately the high rent, the pandemic, the cost of living, rising costs of everything - it doesn’t work in our favour. I have tried to fight for a rent reduction, unfortunately our landlords would like someone with a more commercial offering.

“Please pop in, I’ll be here most of the time, happy to answer any questions. We will continue to serve top quality cask and keg beers until the end, we might run out of a few things so please be patient.

“It’s been a real pleasure to work with some amazing people over the years, and some equally amazing supplies. A real thank you to our regular customers, who without the support we would never have been able to achieve our goals.

“Thanks all - James and the team at Monty’s.” Users on Instagram were quick to express their sadness. One user commented: “This news sucks. We’re so sad.

“You do such an amazing job - thanks for all the great times at Monty’s.” Another was in agreement: “One of the best pubs in all of Scotland, won’t be the same without you.”
