Popular bar that was 'great for football' closes its doors

A popular city centre sports bar has closed down and the business has been liquidated, records show.

Second City, on Cutting Room Square in Ancoats, began winding up proceedings on April 11, 2023, documents from Companies House show. It brings to an end the seven-year history of the firm, which started in 2015.

Last week, the bar’s licence expired ‘as a result’ of the company’s liquidation, a Manchester city council spokesperson said.

It’s led fans to lament its closure on social media. “It was a brilliant spot around 2017/18 for the football,” posted Reddit user DadHusbandSonSelf on the Manchester community. “It was the Philly cheesesteak which I think I had about four times a week there. Great for the football.”

“It's a really great spot,” added user No_Push_4876.

The Companies House documents show the winding-up process completed on April 11, the day it began. The case went before District Judge Matharu in the High Court.

The sports bar, which described itself as ‘American-style’, was popular among fans for its large TV screens, quick eats, and selection of drinks. It had previously had its existence threatened in 2019, the firm said, when its landlord activated a clause in its lease to end the agreement.

That led the bar to move down Cutting Room Square — from 37 Blossom Street, to 23 Blossom Street — in late 2021.
