Poppy wreaths laid to mark Armistice Day 2022

Lanarkshire fell silent today to mark Armistice Day as the fallen of both World Wars and other conflicts were remembered with a two-minute silence.

The lord lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, laid a poppy wreath at North Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters along with provost Kenneth Duffy and chief executive Des Murray.

Silent tribute was paid across the country at 11am; and ceremonies will take place at war memorials all over Lanarkshire this weekend to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The main ceremonies for North Lanarkhire will be in Coatbridge and Motherwell, respectively at the war memorial on Bank Street at 11am on Sunday, and then at the cenotaph in Duchess of Hamilton park at 3pm that afternoon.

Veterans, military representatives, community groups and residents will join dignitaries and politicians for the annual acts of remembrance.

Poppy wreaths will be laid at more than 50 war memorials in towns and villages across Lanarkshire; while the Royal British Legion Scotland will also hold an event at Cumbernauld Village cenotaph at 10.45am on Sunday.
