Pop up film studios near Liverpool's Littlewoods building get go ahead

Plans for a pop-up film studio near Liverpool's Littlewoods building can move forward after receiving approval from the council's cabinet.

The council is looking to build two 20,000 sq ft studios in what it hopes will act as a catalyst for the development of a new "Hollywood of the North".

The proposals were submitted for planning approval by the council last month and received financing this morning.

It came just after Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) was announced as the educational partner for Littlewoods Film and TV Studios last week.

The studios could be finished as early as April next year if planning approval is attained quickly.

Councillor Wendy Simon, deputy mayor for culture and tourism, said: "Clearly we've got developments due to take place on the old Littlewoods site, which have been delayed for a number of reasons, but they certainly are going ahead and because of the demand for film in our city and the great revenue that brings us as a city and the reputation we've got worldwide it was felt we needed these pop up studios.

"They will help support the industry and create skills and jobs in the area but will also continue [productions] through this really difficult time by having facilities on site."

Councillor Simon thanked council staff for pushing the development forward in a short period of time.

Mayor Anderson said the studios and the wider development would form a "tremendous asset" to the city.

Financial support is set to come primarily through Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government also having agreed to fund part of the project in principle.

Filming and production has formed a significant and growing part of Liverpool's economy, with the city being chosen as a base for filmiing for a series of international productions in recent years.
