Polling expert labels Jeremy Corbyn 'one of Labour's worst-ever leaders' after exit poll results

Jeremy Corbyn will go down as "one of the worst leaders in Labour's history", according to a renowned polling expert.

Michael Thrasher told Sky News "the Conservatives have been heading for a clear majority all day long".

Mr Thrasher, from the School of Sociology, Politics & Law at the University of Plymouth,  added: "It really is a remarkable election victory for Boris Johnson, a majority of 86 seats", reports BirminghamLive .

"For Labour it really is an appalling election result and possibly its worst performance in any general election since the Second World War.

"So Jeremy Corbyn, I'm afraid, will go down as one of the worst leaders in Labour's history."

2019 General Election: Exit poll predicts Tory majority

Mr Thrasher continued: "It's quite clear the more constituencies voted to leave the EU in 2016, the better the performance for the Conservatives.

"So the Conservatives are going to gain seats across the Midlands and northern England - these are areas where Labour traditionally has held its way."

He added: "It's the former industrial towns in the Midlands and the north where Labour have really suffered."

The widely-respected exit poll, commissioned by some of the UK's major broadcasters, suggested Boris Johnson could have a majority of 86 with a total of 368 seats for the Conservatives with Labour floundering at 191, the Scottish nationalists at 55 and the Lib Dems 13.

The Brexit Party failed to gain a single seat according to the poll. Plaid Cymru is predicted to win three and the Greens one seat.

Pundits suggested the Tories made significant gains in the north and the Midlands - giving the Conservatives a significant majority.

The pound soared against the dollar and the euro as the General Election exit poll predicted the Conservative majority. A pound was up 1.85 per cent to 1.342 dollars and up 1.09 per cent to 1.202 euros within minutes of the announcement.

The exit poll suggests the biggest majority for a Conservative government since 1987.

Several high-profile politicians are reported to be close to losing their seats.
