A junior police officer has been arrested and charged with accessing online child abuse material.

The NSW constable, aged 21, was arrested on Thursday after an investigation that began with a tip-off in November 2022.

Internal investigators took the officer to Granville Police Station in Sydney's west and charged him with using a carriage service to access child abuse material, police said.

The officer, who is attached to a southwest Sydney command, was granted conditional bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on May 16.

His employment status is under review.
