Police warn of 'cash traps' on ATMs in Glasgow's west end

Police have put out a warning following reports of 'cash traps' being installed on ATMs in Glasgow's west end.

Specifically, officers are investigating having been made aware of possible cash traps on Dumbarton Road.

They have advised local residents to be 'extra vigilant' when using cash machines in the area.

A statement released by police on social media said: "We have had reports of "Cash Traps" being found on Cash Machines in the Dumbarton Road area.

"Enquiries are ongoing in relation to this.

"We would take this opportunity to remind all persons to be extra vigilant when using cash machines and to report any suspicious activity."

Cash trapping is a type of ATM fraud set up to catch banknotes dispensed by an ATM during transactions. This usually takes the form of a criminal device installed on the cash machine, preventing the user from getting their money by trapping the notes, and enabling thieves to return and retrieve the cash later on.
