Police warn locals as new Amazon scam targets Edinburgh and the Lothians

Police in Edinburgh and the Lothians have issued a warning to the public after receiving a number of reports over a fake Amazon scam circulating the area.

Officers have launched an investigation after hoax callers contacted residents claiming to be working at Amazon.

After gaining certain details, the scammers have then asked their targets to download an app on their phone which allows access to personal and financial information.

Following a string of similar scams in the area, the police have issued the following guidance:

  • Amazan will never phone you to ask to download an app or request remote access to your device
  • You should always contact Amazon directly to confirm using a known email/number
  • You should never give out personal bank details over the phone

During lockdown, Edinburgh has seen a huge rise in the number of scams, from bogus workmen to fake NHS calls asking for personal and financial information.
