Police van flips onto its side and shuts road after major smash

A crash involving a police van and a white car closed a busy main road in Manchester into the early hours of Monday morning.

The incident in Beswick caused Ashton Old Road to close at the junction with the A6010 Alan Turing Way.

Police, fire and rescue and the ambulance service all attended the scene.

The police cordoned off the road as the crews attended the two vehicles.

While details of the crash are not clear, a police van was seen laying on its side, across the road's central reservation.

Further along the road, at pedestrian crossing, a white car was positioned so its rear and bumper were facing the pavements on either side of the road. The front end of the vehicle was badly damaged.

The incident affected both directions of the road, with debris scattered across the two lanes.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) reported, in a tweet at 1.10am on Monday Morning, that the road had been closed and urged motorists to seek alternative routes.

In a later tweet at 1.47am, TfGM said the road had reopened.

At the time of writing, Greater Manchester Police were not available for a comment and it is not currently known if any injuries were suffered.
