Police update on ATM explosion at Gloucester Road

Police have not yet been able to identify who was responsible for a cashpoint explosion on Gloucester Road in January.

Officers closed the road in Horfield on January 30, after the ATM blew up at around 3.50am, damaging windows and shop fronts between Church Road and Ashley Down Road.

Avon and Somerset police have confirmed cash was stolen from the machine, but have not revealed the amount.

A force spokesman said on July 17: "There is no update in terms of an arrest or charge.

"Despite extensive enquiries, including a review of CCTV, we’ve been unable to identify the suspect or the vehicle they were using."

Following the explosion, a witness shared with Bristol Live a video he shot in the moments just before and afterwards. It can be watched at the top of this page.

Jeremy, who did not wish to give his surname, used his phone to film a man next to the ATM, but stopped recording when he saw the man was looking at him.

He started filming again in the aftermath of the explosion. Jeremy can be heard repeatedly saying: "That was huge."

The 35-year-old, of Horfield, said: “I was walking back home with my girlfriend after a drink. There was a dude dressed all in black next to the cash machine.

“He had a black petrol scooter and a black helmet on. He’d pulled up by the ATM and I thought he seemed a bit dodgy.

“He was drilling in the bottom of it. It looked like he was using a hand drill."

Jeremy said he saw the man look at him, so he turned away.

“I carried on walking home,” he added. “Less than 30 seconds later, there was an almighty boom.

“The guy was gone on his scooter very quickly. I didn’t see if he took anything.

“There was no smoke. I’m guessing it was one of those gas explosions. After the huge bang, everything went quiet.”

If anyone has information about this incident, who hasn’t yet spoken to police, they are asked to call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5220023554.
