Police taser man "armed with a large machete" in North Belfast

A man police say was "armed with a large machete" was tasered in North Belfast on Monday night.

Footage of the incident outside housing association flats on Flax Street, Ardoyne at 11.55pm has been widely circulated on social media.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.

Chief Inspector Kelly Moore said: "Local crews responded, identifying a male outside the building who was armed with a large machete. The officers engaged with the male who refused to comply with their directions and drew their personal protection weapons.

"The officers continued to engage with the male until the arrival of specialist armed support officers. The male continued to refuse to put the machete down and was subsequently subject to taser deployment and arrested on suspicion of a number of offences. He is now currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

"During a follow-up search of a residential property in the building, a number of items have been seized and taken away for examination.

"As is normal procedure, the Police Ombudsman's Office has been informed of the incident.

"While I am aware that footage of the incident is being shared on social media, I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident who has yet to come forward to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1937 of 18 May 2020," she added.

Details can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
