Authorities arrested 30 street racers and impounded 32 motorcycles after police officers received a tip off about illegal street racing on Rat Uthit Road, which cuts through downtown Hat Yai yesterday.
Residents have been complaining about local youths who turn the main street of their neighbourhood into an illegal race track.
They said the racers usually congregate and race between 4am to 6am on weekends.
"Not only do they alter the course of traffic, they are also a major source of noise pollution," police said.
In the operation, the police "trapped" the racers by blocking both ends of the track. Thirty illegal racers -- 22 males and 8 females -- were arrested.
