Police stop van and find it so full of EGGS it is 2 tonnes overweight

Police were scrambled to an unusual vehicle stop - a van so full of eggs it was 2 tonnes overweight.

The motorway policing team - a joint unit between Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside police forces - spotted the vehicle looking suspicious near Switch Island.

When they opened up the van to see what was weighing it down, they found an unexpected cargo - pallets of eggs.

Police said the van was taken off the road and the driver issued with a fine.

"A busy day for C block who have bid you all a good evening," North West Motorway Police said in a tweet.

"RCVU (Regional Commercial Vehicle Unit) keeping them busy with this driver who may have literally put all his eggs in one basket (so to speak).

The driver was handed a fine and told to keep the van off the road (NWMotorwayPolice)

"Stopped at Switch Island & found to be 2 tonnes overweight. Van prohibited until made safe & GFPN's issued."

Inevitably, the tweet prompted a flurry of egg-flavoured jokes.

"Who’s to blame driver or employer, I suppose it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, or his boss gives him free range and leaves it up to the driver," wrote one joker.

"Someone is going to be shelling out on a big fine," added another.

Another added: "You’ve got to be yolking"
