Police seek three girls spotted on CCTV near school fire

Girls on CCTV near school fire

Three girls captured on CCTV may hold information about who is responsible for a fire that ripped through a western Sydney school.

NSW Police made an appeal for the trio, or anyone who knows them, to come forward as they make further inquiries into a fire at Parramatta Public School on May 19.

Police believed the fire was deliberately lit.

The three were seen on CCTV walking along Charles Street, just around the corner from the school, at the time the blaze started at 4.45am.

It is believed they have vital information about who started the inferno, which caused $10 million in damage to a heritage building.

"They were seen in the vicinity of the school in an enclosed area, and were later sighted at Church St, Paramatta," Detective Superintendent Linda Howlett said.

"The young teenage girls are [probably] 17 to 20 years old."

They are not believed to be responsible for any alleged arson, and are sought only to assist with police inquiries.

The school sustained extensive damage and a two-storey building was completely destroyed, but fortunately it was not in use and no one was injured.

However asbestos was found in the building.

"[This] can cause significant issues to members of the public... that's why we want to apprehend the offenders as quickly as we possibly can," Detective Superintendent Howlett said.

"We want to apprehend [the offenders] before they do something stupid again and actually injure a member of the public."

Given the building's significance, developers were planning to incorporate what is left of it into a new development, but police said that may not be the case anymore.
