A woman allegedly involved in a hit-run which claimed the life of a three-year-old boy in Melbourne's west has been interviewed and released by police.

Ethan Nguyen died in hospital after being hit by the car on Thursday evening.

Police yesterday said it appeared the three-year-old ran onto McIntyre Road in Sunshine North about 6:30pm on Thursday.

Police believe Ethan was dragged under the car for 20 to 30 metres outside of a family daycare centre.

Police said the driver of the sedan did not stop at the scene.

A 73-year-old woman from Heathcote Junction handed herself into police on Friday morning following a public appeal for help finding the driver.

Police confirmed late on Friday that the woman had been interviewed by detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit.

Her sedan was seized and will be forensically tested.

"She was later released pending further enquiries," a spokesperson said.

The police spokesperson said the "investigation into the collision remains active and ongoing".

Grief-stricken family members were at the scene throughout Friday, expressing their shock and disbelief.

"Why, why, why," his paternal grandmother asked through tears.

Friends, family and strangers laid flowers for Ethan at the scene.

Superintendent John Fitzpatrick on Friday said the family of the three-year-old was heartbroken.

"Losing a beautiful young child like that is going to be devastating," he said.

Detectives are asking anyone who saw the incident, or may have dashcam footage, to call Crime Stoppers through the website or on 1800 333 000.
