Police have released vision of a gunman threatening a couple in the garage of an apartment building in Melbourne's inner west last month.
CCTV footage shows a white station wagon driving into the underground car park of a residential complex on Roberts Road in West Footscray at 8.50pm on May 16.
A man wearing a red hoodie and jeans runs in after the car and pulls out what appears to be a handgun, pointing it at the vehicle.
The vision shows him threatening the 27-year-old man and 24-year-old woman inside.
The driver manages to turn the station wagon around and speed out of the car park, smashing through a gate to escape.
The gunman gives chase but does not appear to fire the gun.
First Constable Hayden Bennett said there did not appear to be any links to organised crime or bikie gangs.
He said the victims did not know the man.
Constable Bennett said it was difficult to tell from the footage but police believed the gun was real.
"You can see him rack the top slide of the gun in the video," he said.
"And obviously there's the danger to the victims themselves but even running out of the car park with the gun is a massive concern to anyone who might have been in the area at the time."
He said the motives and intentions of the offender were unknown and the victims may have been chosen randomly.
Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man or has any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
