Police praise Dumfries and Galloway residents for following coronavirus lockdown rules

Police have praised the vast majority of people in Dumfries and Galloway who are following strict lockdown rules.

Officers were granted new powers in the Coronavirus Act on Friday making it a criminal offence to flout health guidance on social distancing to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

But cops point out that there are still a “very small minority” of people refusing to comply and being fined £30.

Deputy Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said: “We’ve had high visibility patrols in place right across the country since we were given these enforcement powers.

“It’s clear that the vast majority of people are complying with the measures. They know the message is to stay at home and by and large they’re doing that.

“There will always be people who refuse to comply but the low number of fines shows they are in the minority and in those cases we’ve had to use enforcement as a last resort.”

There had been just 25 fines issued across Scotland by Tuesday morning.

Mr Graham said members of the public are still getting used to what the lockdown measures mean for day-to-day life.

He said: “This is a big change to the way people live their lives and they need to adjust.

“There were issues with people driving to some outdoor spaces such as parks and we will address this, working with our partners in local authorities where appropriate.”

A man and a woman, aged 24 and 36, have been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a supermarket worker at the Co-op in Dalbeattie on Friday.

A report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.
