Police plan crackdown on crime hotspot

Cops are preparing to launch a crime crackdown in a problem Renfrew street after a spike in drug and violence call-outs.

Ferguson Street has been identified as a hotspot of antisocial behaviour following months of complaints from frustrated residents.

Police revealed they are now determined to stamp out the issue once and for all after a man suffered stab wounds in the street, while another man was allegedly found armed with an imitation firearm earlier this week.

An action plan is now in the works that would see increased patrols by police and Renfrewshire wardens and CCTV in the area.

Problems have been reported in the street over the last five months, with incidents worsening more recently.

Chief Inspector Jim Cast, area commander of Renfrew, Johnstone and the villages, has called on law-abiding residents to help support the forces’s efforts in the area.

He explained: “Over the last few months there has, unfortunately, been an increase in the number of reports of violence and antisocial behaviour from this particular street.

“We have been working with partners in Renfrewshire Council to help reduce the number of issues in the area and that work will continue.

“We are currently examining the possibility of installing more CCTV and we will, of course, be increasing the presence of both police and wardens.”

He added: “It is important to note that the vast majority of residents in the street are law-abiding members of the public.

“A small minority are causing problems for everyone else and it is these individuals that we will be targeting.

“It is with this in mind that I’d urge anyone who lives in the street and who has concerns about antisocial behaviour or drug related activity to get in touch with us immediately on 101.

“You can also get in touch with Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
