NSW Police have issued an arrest warrant for Sydney rapper YC Ewzy in connection to a killing that took place at a petrol station in Surry Hills last year.

Nadal Acherkouk, who may have had links to organised crime, was ambushed and shot dead by two masked gunmen in November of last year at the Cleveland Street service station after attending a nearby dinner at a Turkish restaurant.

Now, authorities are calling for help in locating 31-year-old YC Ewzy, whose real name is Harley Johan and whom NSW Police believe is currently overseas.

Per The Sydney Morning Herald, police’s key line of inquiry is whether Johan was one of the masked men who killed Acherkouk.

Acherkouk was shot in the torso in broad daylight, with CCTV footage showing him darting between petrol pumps before being shot. He was later seen sprinting away down Cleveland Street before succumbing to his injuries at a nearby pedestrian crossing.

After the attack, police allege the two offenders drove from the petrol station in a stolen Porsche, which they then set alight in Kingsford before fleeing in a stolen Audi.

NSW Police, including Acting Superintendent Mathieu Russell and Homicide Squad Commander Andrew Garner will discuss the ongoing investigation at a press conference later today.

In March, Johan released a song titled “Reckless”, which was accompanied by a music video in which two masked men jump from a car and open fire on another person.

The track’s description says the song and video to depicts the “harsh realities of street life” in the “gritty streets” of Sydney.

Prior to his killing, Acherkouk was the victim of an attempted kidnapping outside of a gym in Sydney’s west.

Police were already investigating Acherkouk’s alleged links to organised crime, including connections to the Comanchero motorcycle gang which controls Sydney’s drug trade.

Last year, Garner said Acherkouk’s killing was “outrageous” and showed “a high level of reckless indifference to the public around that area”. He also said investigators were “coming for” those responsible.

Acherkouk was the 27th person to be killed in a gangland murder since 2020.
