Police motorcyclist killed in crash while chasing suspect car in Sheffield

A police motorcyclist has died on duty in Sheffield following a crash with a car while responding to an incident, South Yorkshire Police said.

The force said the 40-year-old was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers in the Ecclesfield area of the city at about 1pm on Tuesday when his bike was in a collision with a blue Toyota Avensis.

The officer was pronounced dead shortly after the crash on Nether Lane, police said.

The Toyota driver, 59, remains in hospital having suffered minor injuries.

Responding to the news, Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted: "The saddest news. Deeply tragic & my thoughts are with the family of this distinguished officer."

Nether Lane remains closed, and police are appealing for witnesses of the collision to contact them.

An eye-witness said the motorbike was travelling at 'a high speed' with sirens flashing when the crash took place.

The witness, told YorkshireLive : "I was coming in the opposite direction and I was about 150 yards behind the vehicle, which was turning right.

"I spotted a motorbike which had its flashing sirens on and it was going at quite a high speed and I believe he was on call.

"There was a huge bang and the motorbike just jumped into the air and flipped.

"He went four or five metres above the other vehicle, so I went closer to see if he was alright and he was unconscious.

"I didn’t try to touch him because I was worried about spinal injuries and when police arrived an officer came to try and speak to him.

"I thought it was a dream. It was like a movie and I was not prepared for what I witnessed."
