Police have arrested a man in Melbourne's north over an alleged attack on Wednesday morning that left a man dead and a woman seriously injured.

Victoria Police said emergency services were called to a Willoughby Street property in Reservoir around 8:20am Wednesday after reports of "assault with an edged weapon".

A 29-year-old man died at the scene and a 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police later released an image of 32-year-old Shaun Sanderson, who they believed was inside the home at the time and known to the two victims.

Police said Mr Sanderson was arrested in Preston around 2:40pm "without incident" and would be interviewed by detectives.

News helicopter footage showed police arresting a man on a traffic island of a busy road in the area.
