Police launch WhatsApp helpline in Kochi

KOCHI: A new dedicated WhatsApp number was launched by the city police on Friday so that residents can send voice clips, photos or videos of traffic violations directly to the police. The system is named ‘Traffic Eye’. Police can be alerted through the number 6238 100 100.

“Project Traffic Eye is being launched with an aim to find quick solutions to traffic congestion and other traffic related problems,” the city police said in a statement.

It further said that the multimedia messages sent by the public would reach the traffic police stations in the city and the traffic police officers will make prioritize it to address them. By quick resolutions, the city police were aiming to considerably reduce traffic related problems, the statement said.

The project was launched by actor and director Sreenivasan through a programme arranged via Google meet on Friday.

Senior police officers, including city police commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam, deputy commissioner of police (law and order) V U Kuriakose, deputy commissioner (admin and crimes) E N Suresh, assistant commissioner (traffic west) Vinod Pillai and assistant commissioner (traffic east) Francis Shelby and other senior officers attended the event.

The city police commissioner has urged the cooperation from the public, especially residents of Kochi, to make the project a success.

“Traffic laws were formulated to make traffic movement easy and safe. The public can report traffic violations and other problems that they face, by sending photos and videos. Even the location of the offence can be shared with us. We assure you that Traffic Eye would function systematically and proactively,” the commissioner said, addressing the online meeting.

After a rise in complaints by passengers, the city police had recently launched a drive to find out private buses which indulge in racing with each other and those who ply violating norms.

Police had found that there was a rise in number of accidents due to the competition between private buses as well. Officials said that such grievances can also be forwarded to the traffic police through the new system.
