Police launch investigation after 'arson attack' at County Durham café

An investigation has been launched following a suspected arson attack at a café in County Durham.

Durham Constabulary received a report of arson in the rear yard of Maddisons Café on Front Street, Consett, at around 4.30pm on Sunday (January 16).

The fire caused "substantial damage" to a wooden trellis feature in the outdoor seating area, officers said.

Police said there have also been issues with people entering the yard outside of the business in recent weeks and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for Consett Police said: "Police are appealing for information following an arson in Consett.

"The fire caused substantial damage to a wooden trellis feature in the outdoor seating area.

"There have also been issues with persons entering the yard outside of business hours in recent weeks.

"Officers are now keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or with CCTV of the incident.

"Please contact Graeme Johnson from the Virtual Investigations Team on 101 then dial extension 206768 quoting crime reference number CRI00379757."
