Police issue warning after Northumberland takeaway delivery driver caught working without insurance

A delivery driver is facing points and a fine after being caught working without insurance.

The man, from Berwick, Northumberland, discovered he was not covered to act as a delivery driver while on loud speaker to his insurance company in the presence of police officers.

On Tuesday just before 6pm, officers stopped an Audi A5 in the Tweedmouth area. The driver in question was delivering a takeaway.

When questioned he insisted his insurance covered making deliveries but his insurance provider – who he rang in front of the officers - said otherwise.

He now faces six points and a £300 fine.

Northumbria Police is now warning others that they could even lose their licence if they don't have the relevant insurance.

Road Safety Sergeant Jane Munro, of the Motor Patrols department, said: “With restaurants and shops closed there has been a big boom in the amount of people ordering takeaways and online deliveries, resulting in more people turning to a career as a self-employed delivery driver.

“But in order to use your car for deliveries you require additional insurance cover or risk invalidating your insurance altogether.

“Please don’t get caught out and make sure you understand what your policy does and does not cover.

“If you’re caught driving with invalid insurance you risk a fine, getting your car seized, points or even losing your licence.

"If you are unsure if your car insurance covers you then contact your provider to find out more."
