WhatsApp Easter egg scam: Police issue warning over viral message

Police have issued a warning about a scam urging people to click on a link to win a free Easter basket from Cadbury.

Avon and Somerset Police say scammers are sending messages via WhatsApp prompting people to redeem free chocolate.

They said on Twitter: "SCAM ALERT If you receive a message wrongly claiming to be from @CadburyUK offering you a free Easter basket, don't click it.

"You can report suspicious text messages by forwarding them to 7726 for free. Don't get fooled just because it's April 1."

Cadbury says it has "been made aware" of the scam is working to resolve it.

It said in a statement: "We’ve been made aware of circulating posts on social media claiming to offer consumers a free Easter Chocolate basket.

"We can confirm this hasn't been generated by us & we urge consumers not to interact. Your security is our priority & we’re currently working to resolve this."
