Police issue 'drug sweets' warning after schoolboy who ate one is hospitalised

A schoolboy was hospitalised after eating 'drug sweets' that were laced with spice.

Police in nearby Lincolnshire have issued a warning after the boy ate the sweets that were in a pink Nerds packet.

The boy thought the sweets contained cannabis but it was later discovered that they actually contained spice, which can be up to 100 times more potent, Lincolnshire Live reports.

The boy was put on a drip after being taken to hospital to help him recover.

Police have written to parents in the county to warn them about the sweets.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Knubley said they have been around for “some considerable time” and can be purchased on the internet.

He said: “We are sharing this information with you to help prevent young people buying and taking these drugs, and we’d be very grateful if you could be on your guard to this issue within school premises.”

He added: “If you have any concerns at all, or spot these products on your premises, please call 101.”

Detective Chief Inspector Knubley said that a man has been taken into custody after police retrieved packets of the ‘sweets’.

Police believe the packets are sold for £5 and are advertised on social media to boost their advertising.

A force spokesperson said no arrests have been made.
