Police investigating possible link between a body found in inner Melbourne and the death of another woman nearby

Victoria Police have said they believe the alleged murder of a woman in Melbourne's CBD may be linked to the death of a second woman in inner Melbourne.

The second woman's body was found in an apartment at Waterside Place in Docklands about 1:30pm on Friday.

Her death is being treated as suspicious.

Police said in a statement that investigators went to the Docklands residence as part of an investigation into the death of a 31-year-old Chinese national in an apartment on Latrobe Street in Melbourne's CBD earlier this week.

They said while the exact circumstances around the death of the 51-year-old woman in Docklands are still being established, they believe the two incidents are linked.

On Thursday, a 22-year-old Huntingdale man was arrested and later charged over the 31-year-old woman's death.

Detective Acting Superintendent Dean Thomas from Crime Command said he understands community members are concerned following the death of the women.

"At this stage there is nothing to indicate we are looking for any further victims, and we have a man in custody who was known to both women," he said.

"He has been charged in relation to the death of the 31-year-old woman who was located at the Latrobe Street apartment and our enquiries are ongoing in terms of what connection he has to the second death."

No charges have been laid in relation to the second death.

Detective Thomas said it is a "devastating time" for the families of both women.

"Police will ensure they have access to all the appropriate support services," he said.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity around the Docklands apartment between December 27 and 29, or who has CCTV or dash-cam footage of the area.

Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
