Police have informed the family of man who has been missing for more than six months that they have recovered a body from a reservoir near Heathrow Airport.

Glen Godfrey, 38, was last seen on Staines Moor on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, sparking a major search operation.

Surrey Police said they found a body after they were called to a nearby reservoir just after 11am on Tuesday.

Mr Godfrey, from Ashford, was wearing a camouflage padded jacket, brown cargo trousers, brown boots and possibly carrying a backpack at the time of his disappearance.

Witnesses said Mr Godfrey allegedly removed his boots and clothes before running through a wooded area.

Footage filmed by Mr Godfrey’s family also showed clothing and knives uncovered in the woods where he allegedly disappeared.

Detectives from North Surrey's Criminal Investigation Department commented at the time saying they were “extremely concerned for his welfare”.

Police conducted land, air and underwater searches within the vicinity, whilst also reviewing hours of CCTV footage and phone data.

His family even brought in specialist divers, with some relatives turning detective, in the hunt for their son.

On Tuesday morning, Surrey Police recovered a body from King George VI Reservoir and informed Mr Godfrey’s family of its discovery.

Officers left the scene on Stanwell Moor Road on the A3044 just before 7pm.

The force said formal identification had not yet been carried out, adding they were unable to confirm whether it was Mr Godfrey.

It is believed the reservoir, a popular location for water sports, particularly sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding, is not currently in use.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “The body of a man has been recovered from a reservoir in Stanwell yesterday.

“Surrey Police and Surrey Fire & Rescue were called to the King George VI Reservoir shortly before 11.15am following a report of a body in the water at the location.

“The identity of the man is yet to be confirmed, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the man’s death.”

King George VI Reservoir covers around one and a half kilometres and contains between around 4 million gallons of water with banks roughly 56ft high.

Thames Water, which runs the reservoir, said: “This is a matter for the police and we will not provide any further comment."

Specialist Group International, the private diving team assisting Mr Godrey’s family in their rescue efforts, declined to comment.
