Police hunt for 'suspicious' driver who asked young girl to get into car in Gateshead village

A young girl ran home after a stranger tried to get her into his car, police say.

Officers are today hunting the driver, who approached the youngster in Marley Hill, Gateshead, on Friday night.

Police say it was reported that the man, who was in a black car, "gestured" to his vehicle after speaking to the girl on Cuthbert Street.

An investigation has been launched and officers are appealing to the public to help trace the car.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Shortly before 6.10pm on Friday police received a report of suspicious behaviour on Cuthbert Street in the Marley Hill area of Gateshead.

"It was reported that a young girl had been approached by a man in a black car who was not known to her, who has then spoken to her and gestured to his vehicle. The girl declined and ran home before the incident was reported to police.

"Enquiries are ongoing to locate the vehicle and the driver to establish the full circumstances surrounding the report."
