Police hunt 'deplorable' thieves who stole from Carluke foodbank

Heartless thieves have broken into and stolen from a Lanarkshire foodbank.

Police are appealing for information to help trace the thieves who ran off with £180 in cash and a key for Clydesdale Food Bank's van.

The robbery took place on Monday at the charity based at High Street in Carluke.

Since the incident, a local business kindly recoded the stolen spare key for the van, saving the foodbank hundreds of pounds.

However, volunteers are asking the community to rally in recouping some of the stolen cash through online fundraising.

Inspector Tony Gallagher from Larkhall Police station said: ”Stealing from a foodbank, which is in place to support the most needy and vulnerable in our community, is a particularly deplorable act and will undoubtedly have an immediate impact upon this crucial resource and the services it provides.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of the foodbank late afternoon on Monday, who may have witnessed suspicious activity, or may have information relating to the person(s) responsible, to contact police via 101 and quote incident number 2746 of Monday 14 June.

"Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A spokesperson from Clydesdale Food Bank said: "Unfortunately we have had a theft from the Clydesdale foodbank resulting in £180 of cash and the spare key to our van taken.

"We are so disappointed that someone would steal from the Food Bank. It is our aim to help people who need food.

"All we can hope and pray is that this person really needed help and will use the money they took to help look after themselves."
