Police give update after boy, 11, was hit by car in North Shields

A young boy who was hit by a car in North Shields is expected to make a full recovery.

The 11-year-old boy was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Wednesday afternoon with head and leg injuries after being struck on Howdon Road.

The boy suffered a fractured leg in the collision and was kept at the hospital overnight as a precaution after hitting his head.

Police officers carried out initial investigations at the scene but there is not expected to be any further action taken.

The road was closed between Minton Lane and Waterville Road for several hours from 3.30pm to allow officers to examine the scene.

Markers could be seen on the road and officers examined the VW car involved, including testing its brakes.

One resident said: "I got out a taxi and there were loads of police cars.

"There must've been about five cars and an ambulance. There was an unmarked car as well.

"There were so many police. I didn't know what had happened.

"There were a lot of people standing on the side of the street as well. I thought there was a bomb or something."

Another woman said: "I didn't see what happened. I came out and there were police everywhere.

"There is always heavy traffic on the road. When I try to get my car out, it is down to a kind person letting me out."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called at 3.23pm.

They added: "The incident occurred outside Tait’s fish and chip shop on Howdon Road.

"We sent an ambulance to the scene where police were providing first aid to the boy."
