Police investigating the Manchester terror attack are searching a rubbish dump off the M66 near Bury.
Officers were combing a Viridor Waste Management site at Pilsworth, near Bury, but it was unclear what they were looking for.
Greater Manchester Police revealed the news in a tweet and a police spokeswoman told The Independent: “Officers [working] in relation to the attack are search the site and the search is currently on-going.
“That’s as much detail as we can say about it.”
Aerial footage from a Sky News camera showed a number of police staff in white forensic suits and that a large red-and-white tent had been set up to protect part of the site.
Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News that four police vans had arrived at the landfill.
One van parked at the entrance to the site which was closed to the public.
Officers were also guarding gates on a public path which goes around the dump.
Earlier reports emerged that a trainee pilot had been arrested in west Sussex in connection with the bombing, which killed 22 people and injured more than 100.
The 23-year-old was detained on suspicion of terrorist offences and was the 16th person to be arrested as part of the inquiry.
