An investigation is under way after a large cannabis farm was discovered in County Durham.

Police were attending reports of a burglary in Consett when they made the discovery on Monday evening.

Officers had been called to an address on York Avenue and found a substantial amount of cannabis.

They say it has now been destroyed and an investigation launched.

No arrests have yet been made in connection.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to an address on York avenue, Consett shortly before 6.30pm last night (November 23) following reports of a burglary.

"Following attendance, officers discovered a large cannabis grown.

"It has since been dismantled and enquiries are ongoing."
