Police crack down on teens using illegal off-road bikes

Police in Wishaw have targeted youths using bikes and quads following complaints from angry residents.

On Wednesday, community officers carried out a day of action in relation to off-road motor bikes being used on the public footpath and fields near to Branchal Road in Cambusnethan.

Two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, had their bikes seized and both were charged with a number of road traffic offences.

Inspector Alan Mulholland, from Wishaw police office, said officers had acted after receiving a number of complaints.

Inspector Mulholland continued: “Often these vehicles are being ridden on public footpaths and main roads which inherently causes great danger to not only the people riding the bikes, but the general public and road users.

“I want to be clear to anyone riding these types of machines in situations that presents danger to anyone. We will enforce the law and seize the vehicles off of anyone found to be riding them illegally in a public place.

Inspector Mulholland also had a message for the parents of kids who are caught on the bikes.

“If you are a parent or guardian who is letting your children ride these types of vehicles in a public place, we will be looking to discuss the matter with them as they too can be committing an offence of causing and permitting the vehicle to be used unlawfully,” added the inspector.

“We have to take a firm position on the dangerous use of off road bikes and quad bikes and you can expect to see a police presence to educate and enforce the law around this in the coming weeks and months within the Wishaw and Shotts areas.”

Anyone with information about people who are using off road bikes or quads on public land should contact police on 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers-uk.org online or by phoning 0800 555 111.
