Police charge woman with murder over Albanvale toddler's death

Police have charged a woman with murder over the death of a toddler in Melbourne's north-west yesterday.

The body of the three-year-old child was found at a property in Dover Street, Albanvale, at about 4pm on Monday.

A 31-year-old woman has been charged with one count of murder.

Children's toys were left at the scene on Tuesday as tribute.

Neighbour Mele Taliauli said she "couldn't stop the tears" when she heard the news.

Another neighbour, Alfred Thintuep, said the toddler was "a really friendly boy".

On Tuesday afternoon, the accused woman faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court but a large portion of the hearing was closed to the public.

Her lawyers successfully argued for a pseudonym order to be granted, banning the publication of the woman’s name and that of the deceased child until her next court hearing in May.

The order was granted by Magistrate Brett Sonnet.

The woman was flanked by three security guards as she listened to proceedings in the court dock and was not required to enter a plea.

She said, "yep", when asked by the magistrate if she understood what was happening.

She was remanded in custody until a committal mention hearing on May 16.
