Man faces court after chase ends in arrest on riverbank

A MAN remains behind bars after he faced court over an alleged police pursuit in the Hunter this week.

Police were called to Finney Close at Rutherford after reports of a man acting suspiciously around a ute just after 11am on Tuesday.

The vehicle, which had been reported stolen, had been driven from the scene by the time police arrived, but officers soon found it on High Street at Maitland.

A short pursuit took place after the driver allegedly failed to stop the ute when the police vehicle approached it with lights and sirens activated.

Officers stopped the chase for safety reasons and later found the vehicle abandoned on the bank of the Hunter River.

They arrested 28-year-old Jessy Edwards nearby and charged with seven counts - including dangerous driving, driving a stolen vehicle, and having a knife in public.

He was refused bail when he faced Maitland Local Court - where he was not required to enter any pleas - on Wednesday.

The matter was adjourned to June 19.
