Police appeal after woman raped in Trongate lane during rush hour

Detectives are continuing to appeal for information after a woman was raped in a city centre lane in Glasgow.

Police Scotland have arrested a 37-year-old man following the incident, which occurred around 5.45pm on Tuesday (September 10).

Between 5.30pm and 5.45pm, the 36-year-old woman was seen distressed in New Wynd in the Trongate area. She was assisted by members of the public who then left the area. Shortly after, she was seriously sexually assaulted by a man.

Detective Inspector Suzanne McNulty, the officer in charge of the enquiry, said: "New Wynd is a pedestrianised lane, running between the King Street NCP car park and the Trongate, and is a busy thoroughfare during the day.

"I am appealing to anyone who helped the woman or who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the incident to come forward."

The 37-year-old man is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today (Thursday, September 12).

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 - quoting incident number 4058 of 10 September 2019. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
