Police appeal after thug smashes into Tube driver's cab to launch vicious assault on moving train

Detectives have launched an appeal after a tube driver was attacked by a man who broke into his cab at an east London station.

The train was moving when a thug smashed through the driver’s door near Bromley-by-Bow station.

He went on to repeatedly assault the driver in an attack police called “shocking”. The driver managed to stop the train safely despite being assaulted.

British Transport Police (BTP) have issued a picture of a man they want to trace in connection with the attack which took place at just before midnight on 22 January.

A BTP statement said: “We are today issuing images following a shocking assault on a train driver.

“The incident happened at around 11.55pm on Monday 22 January when a man smashed through the driver’s door and repeatedly assaulted him.

“Despite the attack the driver managed to safely bring the train to a stop but was left shaken and traumatised by what happened. The man left the train at Bromley-By-Bow station.”

“Officers believe the man in the images may have information that could help their investigation.”

Police have been trawling CCTV footage in the hunt for the attack while also interviewing anyone who may have been on the train. The driver’s cab is protected by a door so that members of the public cannot interfere with the running of the train.

Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference number 710 of 22 January.

To remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
