Plymouth shooting: Child among six people confirmed dead after gunman opens fire

Five people including a child, aged three, were shot dead when a gunman opened fire on a street in Plymouth.

Police confirmed the devastating news that three females and three males, one of which was the shooter, all died in the terrifying rampage on Thursday evening.

Horrified witnesses reported hearing "loud bangs" and "gun shots" as the deadly spree began in the Keyham area at about 6.10pm.

One said she saw a man "randomly" start shooting at people, though police have said the tragic incident is not terror related.

The shooter has been confirmed as Jake Davison by police, with a gun resembling a pump-action shotgun recovered at the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed the "very young girl" killed was aged just three.

The force said the first victim was a 51-year-old woman known to the shooter.

The other victims included a 43-year-old man who was related to the girl, a 59-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman who died later at Derriford Hospital.

The two people injured by Davison who are still being treated in hospital are a 53-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man who are known to each other, the force said.

Chief constable Shaun Sawyer said the first victim had a familial relationship to the attacker and was killed inside a property.

He would not confirm if she was Davison's mum or if it was his home address.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday morning, he said Davison then entered Biddick Drive where he immediately shot and killed a very young girl, and her male relative.

Further along the road he aimed and shot at two local residents - a man and a woman - who received significant but currently not life-threatening injuries, he continued.

Davison then entered an adjacent parkland and shot a man who died at the scene, before moving to Henderson Place and shooting another woman who died in hospital.

"Eye witnesses told us Mr Davison then turned the gun upon himself, taking his own life," added Mr Sawyer.

The chief constable also confirmed the shooter had been a gun licence holder since at least 2020.

Davison's social media accounts show an isolated young man who had an obsession for guns and the US.

He posted workout videos on YouTube from a home gym, as well as concerning vlogs of him ranting about his inability to get a girlfriend.

Boris Johnson has paid tribute to those killed and thanked emergency services for their response.

The Prime Minister sent his thoughts to those affected by the "tragic incident" in a tweet on Friday morning.

According to a Facebook page linked to the suspect, he lived in Plymouth but was originally from Phoenix, Arizona in the US.

The UK has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world, and mass shootings are rare. This was the first mass shooting in the country for 11 years.

Witness Sharron Turner, 57, lives nearby and said she saw the gunman kick in the front door of a semi-detached property.

She told the Times the man was dressed in black and grey and armed with what looked like a semi-automatic weapon.

"Firstly, there was shouting, followed by gunshots - three possibly four to begin with," she added, speaking to the BBC.

"He ran from the house shooting as he ran and proceeded to shoot at a few people in the linear park up from the drive."

Another witness, Robert Pinkerton, said he heard a loud bang and when he turned a corner he bumped into the shooter, and "swerved" when he saw a gun.

He said he saw an injured woman in the doorway of a hairdressers and witnessed a man trying to give her medical attention.

Another eyewitness wrote on social media as the incident unfolded: “There’s [a man] on the rampage in my cul-de-sac with a real gun and he’s already shot two people.

“They are laying on the ground. One is dead – blood everywhere. I’m shaking like leaf.”

Local residents were still in lockdown on Friday morning as police investigate the scene with cordons in place on roads nearby.

Crime scene officers in white suits could be seen using cameras in the street and members of the public living locally were barred from going into their homes.

Four people, including the shooter, died at the scene, while a woman died in hospital in what police called a "serious firearms incident".

Multiple others are being treated for injuries.

Video posted on Twitter showed a man partially covered in a blanket with blood staining the pavement. Two police officers, one armed, stood over the body.

Local MP Luke Pollard said more people were being treated for their injuries in hospital.

He said: "Just so unspeakably awful. My condolences and thoughts are with the families.

"I’m utterly devastated that one of the people killed in the Keyham shooting was a child under ten years old."

"All of the next of kin of the deceased have been located and informed by Devon & Cornwall Police officers.

"Devon & Cornwall Police would stress this is not a terrorism related incident.

"The area has been cordoned off and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

"Investigations are continuing into the incident and disruption to the road network in the Keyham will remain throughout the night.

"Police continue to ask any members of the public with mobile phone footage of the immediate aftermath of the incident not to post this on social media platforms and to respect those families who have lost loved ones this evening."

Three air ambulances landed in a park before heading to a nearby hospital while the the Hazardous Area Response Unit and National Police Air Service also rushed to the scene.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted: "There's much we don't know about the shocking events in Plymouth. However it's clear tragedy has hit Keyham.

"My thoughts are with the families and neighbours of those caught up in this nightmare. I pay tribute to our emergency services who ran towards events we'd all run from."

Offers of help have flooded in from the local community and Ford Primary School and St Marks Church on Cambridge Road, have said they will open their doors to support local people from Friday morning.

Gun regulations were tightened further in the UK after a man with the legal right to own a firearm burst into a primary school in the Scottish town of Dunblane in 1996 and opened fire on children and teachers, killing 17.

Thomas Hamilton, who had been accused of inappropriate behaviour with young boys, also injured 15 other victims.

In June 2010 Derrick Bird, a taxi driver, shot dead 12 people and injured 11 others before committing suicide in Copeland, Cumbria.
