PlayStation 5 could feature a glasses-friendly VR headset, Sony patent reveals

There’s at least 18 months to go before Sony releases its PlayStation 5 console, but despite this, several rumours are already circulating about the device.

The latest rumour is based on a patent granted to Sony last week, which describes a glasses-friendly VR headset.

The patent lays out ideas for a ‘head-mounted’ display with extra space between the screen and the users’ face, which could be ideal for people who wear glasses.

It explains: “Systems and methods for tracking gaze information of a user includes detecting, by a sensor of a head mounted display, that a user is wearing the HMD.

“An encoded signal indicative of glasses being worn with the HMD, by the user, is detected by the sensor of the HMD. In response to processing the encoded signal, a gaze detection function of the HMD is disabled by the HMD.

“Encoded gaze data transmitted by the glasses is received by the HMD. The encoded gaze data is processed by an image frame processor and used to adjust image frames produced for rendering on a display screen of the HMD.”

Could this be what the PS5 looks like?

PlayStation Store will now REFUND pre-orders and games - but there's a catch

Sadly, it remains unclear whether or not the patent relates to the PlayStation 5, or an unrelated device being worked on by Sony.

As with most rumours, Sony is yet to comment on the patent. We’ll have to wait and see what they have in store for us!
