Players ratings as lacklustre Celtic crash out of Champions League on penalties

Kasper Schmeichel 4

Terribly misjudged McGregor's backpass and forced to handle to offer Kairat a glorious indirect free-kick chance. Spared blushes as the strike was blocked. Unable to save any penalties in the shoot-out.

Anthony Ralston 6

Decent display from the full-back, if largely ineffective progressing further up the park. Tireless in effort over 120 minutes.

Cameron Carter-Vickers 6

One of the better performers on a miserable evening for Celtic in Kazakhstan. Won his battles in defence but didn't step out of the backline often enough.

Liam Scales 5

Dependable again in defence, fault not overly on the defence for Kairat failings. Shifted to left-back, which limits the threat down that flank, but didn't do anything wrong.

Kieran Tierney 5

Managed 75 minutes before being replaced. Kept fairly quiet on the whole on a night Celtic needed someone to take the match by the scruff of the neck. Still building up his fitness.

Callum McGregor 5

A little bypassed in Almaty. So often dictates play for Celtic, but was limited to shutting down Kairat breaks and then shuffling the ball on. Scored his penalty.

Reo Hatate 5

Another who struggled to acclimate to match for long periods. Showed quality to pick out Forrest for header, but didn't do it often enough.

Benjamin Nygren 6

Twice went close in extra-time, first a close-range shot turned behind, before a snapshot just wide of margin. Didn't have the killer ball forward or the finishing touch, but was strongest in midfield for Celtic.

James Forrest 5

Close to an opener with a first-half header just tipped over the bar. Lacked some creativity, but was not helped by team-mates who failed to provide attacking support.

Yang 5

Livewire from the bench in the first leg, but lacklustre in Almaty. Unable to seriously threaten his marker on another difficult night for the Celtic frontline.

Daizen Maeda 4

A hellish night for the forward. Ought to have won the match in normal time when he raced clear but blazed over in a costly error. Missed in a shoot-out with a poor strike on goal.

Arne Engels (for Forrest, 70) 4

Made a difference, especially in extra-time. Added attacking impetus, but couldn't carve open Kairat. Scored from the spot in shoot-out.

Adam Idah (for Yang, 70) 3

Acted as a focal point for Celtic, but too often dropped too deep and closer to his own box. Missed penalty.

Dane Murray (for Tierney, 75) 5

Looks assured in defence for Celtic. Appears ready for a significant role in the first-team this season.

Luke McCowan (for Hatate, 106) 3

On for the final 15 minutes but with limited real involvement in proceedings. Saw penalty saved.

Colby Donovan (for Ralston, 106) 4

Teed up Nygren with a decent cut-back in the final stages. A bright note on a bad night for Celtic.
