The play area in Roath Park is regarded as the "jewel in the crown" when it comes to Cardiff's parks but families were left disappointed after the park remained closed despite the Welsh Government lifting restrictions.

At the time, 30 parks in the city had been reopened but Cardiff council said it was operating a phased approach when it came to reopening parks in order maintain safety.

But after a long wait Roath Park's play area will reopen on Saturday, along with 20 other parks in Cardiff.

A spokesman from Cardiff Council said: "Play areas are being opened on a phased basis, following a safety first approach and with a view to ensuring that children across the city have some play provision in their local area as quickly as possible.

"In line with Welsh Government guidance and health and safety legislation. All sites have gone through a Covid-19 risk assessment and the equipment and safety surfaces have been inspected by a qualified playground inspector, prior to re-opening.

"Changes have been made to some play areas to help maintain social distancing and minimise risk of transmitting Covid-19 – for example, some swing seats have been removed to ensure a 2 metre distance is maintained."
