Plans will transform abandoned Edinburgh shop into bakery and ice cream parlour

A derelict building in Portobello could be undergoing a huge transformation if plans are approved.

Proposals are to be discussed this week by the council's planning committee over turning the deserted shop on Bath Street into something much more glamorous.

Unused for some time, the plans hope to change the building's change of use from a shop to a sandwich seller and patisserie, providing yet another eatery near the beach front.

Conditions for approval include a large amount of stonework on the property being repaired and replaced to allow the building to go back to its original look.

As well as this, the site would be given the licensing hours of 7am-8pm to minimise any disruption to local residents.

Currently a B-listed building, the new eatery will occupy the ground floor unit, which has previously been a betting shop.

If plans get underway to refurbish the site, an ice cream cabinet and cake display will be included in the layout.

Proposals have also detailed that the site would sell sandwiches, toasties and soup, and will work under a ‘restricted cooking’ premises.

A new frontage will also be erected, as well as a 'suspended acoustic ceiling', to prevent any noise from the shop travelling into the flat above.

The City Council are expected to discuss the plans for 46 Bath Street at a meeting of their Local Planning Body on Wednesday (April 28).
