Plans to build a new Primary School in West Lothian have picked up pace

Plans to build a new primary school in East Calder are gathering pace.

An application for the new building on land to the east of the existing school building and early years centre has been submitted.

The existing early years building will be retained following demolition of the remainder of the existing building and external play spaces.

A new car park and servicing area will be created, including new outside play spaces and improvements to the early years play space, along with construction of public external space and a multi-use games area.

In April, we reported the council had approved plans for the school development in Langton Road.

The current school building is not suitable for the future delivery of high-quality education due to a number of issues including suitability, accessibility and sustainability.

A successful bid was made to the Learning Estate Investment Programme, which is jointly funded by Scottish and Local Government, and will enable a replacement school to be delivered. The new school is expected to be open from August 2024 and the project is being delivered on behalf of the council by Hub South East with Morrison Construction as the Tier-1 contractor.

James Cameron, head of education (learning, policy and resources) said: “This is an important step forward in the delivery of the new £17.5 million East Calder Primary School.

“The new school will enable us to provide the best possible learning environment for East Calder pupils, supporting delivery of a modern curriculum.”
