Plans for new restaurant on Liverpool's Bold Street

A new restaurant could be opened on Bold Street under plans recently submitted to Liverpool Council.

Proposals from Andrew Skeete would see the Smiffys fancy dress shop, which is continuing to trade, become a restaurant or bistro.

Bold Street is already home to popular restaurants such as Maray and The Italian Club, with restaurants and bars in the area benefitting from a closure of the road to traffic, allowing expanded space for restaurants to serve people outside.

There are few details about exactly what type of restaurant would take Smiffys place, but a report submitted to the council said the plans would “bring the building back in to life as a restaurant/bistro which will in turn create safe and accessible environment as well as creating a visually attractive sense of place as a result of good well designed architecture”.

A heritage statement to the council said: “The property has been designed to retain the original character of the existing property maintaining key features of historical interest.

“The design is to respond to local character and history, and reflect the identity of local surroundings and materials, while not preventing or discouraging appropriate innovation.

“The Wood Street and Bold Street area is an established commercial and residential area. With this in mind the existing façade is to be retained (refurbished and made good).”

Drawings submitted with the application show plans for two floors of dining space on the ground floor and basement, as well as a bar with seating on the ground floor.

Liverpool Council’s planning department will decide on Mr Skeete’s proposals in the coming months.
