Plans for new homes on busy south Liverpool street set for approval

Plans for new homes on the site of an old community building south Liverpool are set to be approved by councillors.

The council’s planning committee will meet next Tuesday to consider proposals to convert the old Royal British Legion in Mossley Hill into flats.

The committee was supposed to consider the plans for the building, on Rose Lane, earlier in the summer, but a delay means it should now get the go ahead next week.

Two linked applications for the site could eventually see up to 18 homes built there.

Full permission could be granted by the committee for the demolition of part of the side of the building to replace it with flats, while more tentative permission could be granted for a less detailed proposal to extend the building out to the rear.

A report to councillors said: “The indicative layout indicates two new blocks of apartments situated behind the original club building with areas of car parking, landscaping and circulation space in between each block.

“Vehicular access is obtained via a vehicular only access to the south west of the club building with the pedestrian access on the other side.”

The bowling green, which could be partially built over under the second part of the proposals, was previously used by a bowling club but is now out of use.

A number of neighbours have objected to the proposals, as has ward councillor Andrew Makinson.

Councillor Makinson argued the plans, which include a number of parking spaces, don’t leave enough room for traffic to pass properly on Rose Lane while vehicles access the site.

He also argued against the loss of the bowling green, as did a number of neighbours.

However, officers have recommended the plans be approved by the planning committee, subject to a legal agreement and a number of financial contributions.

The committee will consider the plans next Tuesday.
