A roundabout is set to be installed on a busy Blantyre road that links the town to nearby Newton and Uddingston.
South Lanarkshire Council has approved plans to install the three-way roundabout and associated alterations on the B758 Blantyre Farm Road at its junction with Calder Road and Newton Farm Road.
The roundabout was indentified as necessary following the development of the existing Newton Community Growth Area, just one mile away.
The existing T junction on Blantyre Farm Road and Calder Road has limited visibility and can also be prone to traffic backing up when vehicles are turning. The local authority agrees that a new roundabout would aid increased traffic flow along both Calder Road and Newton Farm Road as vehicles move towards Blantyre, Uddingston, Bothwell and the junction for the M74.
A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: "The roundabout is part of improvement works associated with the Newton housing Community Growth Area.
"These works were agreed as part of the planning agreement for the development. The junction alterations will aid the flow of traffic along Calder Road and Newton Farm Road as it heads towards the M74 and beyond."
While the installation of a roundabout there will remove some greenspace and trees, the layout will result in new planting and a SUDS pond to attract local wildlife. It will also hope to improve safer cycle connections than currently exist in the area, encouraging increased cycle use.
It is being funded and constructed by the main developer in Newton, Taylor Wimpey.
