Plane flipped during crash landing after engine 'lost power'

A plane flipped over during a crash landing because its engine "lost power".

A plane crash landed in a field just outside Wigan, seriously injuring its pilot, after its engine "lost power". An air accident investigation report said the light aircraft got into difficulties shortly after taking off from Barton Airport on Sunday, May 29 this year.

The report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch noted the pilot said the engine "lost power" and the speed dropped to "idle" around two miles from the airport and at about 750ft. The pilot selected a field off Rindle Road in Tyldesley for a "forced landing" but the Tecnam P92-EM Echo plane flipped over when its nose hit the soft ground.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said at the time five engines and a technical response unit were called to the crash. The spokesperson said: "Firefighters using trauma equipment and a long board worked with colleagues from Northwest Ambulance Service to treat two people at the scene, before they were taken to the hospital."

The Manchester Evening News reported the pilot, a 65-year-old man with more than 1,500 hours of flying experience, was seriously injured in the crash. His passenger suffered minor injuries.

The plane's engine was tested following the crash and "ran satisfactorily", the report said. The report concluded: "The cause of the power loss could not be determined."
