Placido Domingo has announced he has tested positive for coronavirus and is in self-isolation.

The 79-year-old Spanish opera star told fans in an announcement on Facebook.

The singer said he and his family are in quarantine at home and he's feeling okay, but suffering symptoms of COVID-19 including a fever and a cough.

He said: "I feel it is my moral duty to announce to you that I have tested positive".

"I beg everyone to be extremely careful, follow the basic guidelines by washing your hands frequently, keeping at least a 6ft distance from others, doing everything you can to stop the virus from spreading and please above all stay home if you can!"

The tenor's announcement comes after his glittering career was rocked by accusations of sexual misconduct.

Mr Domingo was accused of harassment, abusing his power and inappropriate behaviour on multiple women in he classical music industry.

At first he denied the claims but then issued an apology after the American Guild of Musical Artists and LA Opera found the allegations to be credible

He said he had "analysed" the complaints and "grown up with the experience" since the first allegations came out last August.

He made a statement to Spanish news agency Europa Press in February saying he understands why women who accused him felt they could not speak out about it as "as they worried how that could affect their career".

He was quoted as saying: "Even though it was not (my) intention, never ever anybody should feel this way."

Mr Domingo has since had a number of performances cancelled and resigned as the director of the LA Opera.

Spain is the third hardest-hit country after China and Italy with 28,572 infections and 1,720 deaths in the virus outbreak.

The virus has infected several leading politicians in Spain, and the prime minister's wife, as well as causing the death of former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz.

Mr Domingo is the latest celebrity to be diagnosed with the deadly bug. Tom Hanks and Idris Elba previously announced they too were in lockdown after testing positive.
