Pizza Express to close 67 UK restaurants with over 1000 jobs at risk

Popular restaurant chain Pizza Express has said it could close around 15% of its UK restaurants, with up to 1,100 jobs at risk.

The ailing company said that " the business and its advisers have undertaken an extensive review of its operations to plan appropriately for the future" including a site-by-site review of each branch.

Pizza Express has eight branches in Edinburgh - Deanhaugh Street, Fort Kinnaird, Holyrood, Leith, Morningside, Ocean Terminal, George IV Bridge and North Bridge.

The chain was set to reopen the restaurants across the Scottish capital from August 13 - but now teams at the venues have been plunged into uncertainity.

Pizza Express will close around 15% of its 449 UK restaurants - equivalent to around 67 outlets.

On Tuesday, bosses said the firm had reached an agreement with its secured creditors and its majority shareholder, Hony Capital, for a restructuring of the business that will cut costs by £144million and help it bounce back from the pandemic.

However, it stressed that the final outcome of the restructuring has "yet to be decided".

They have also said that reducing the size of its estate will help it to protect 9,000 jobs.

Zoe Bowley, UK and Ireland managing director, added: "Our business has a long history of success, but the UK-wide lockdown has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard.

"While the financial restructuring is a positive step forward, at the same time we have had to make some really tough decisions.

"As a result, it is with a heavy heart that we expect to permanently close a proportion of our restaurants, losing valued team members in the process. This is incredibly sad for our Pizza Express family and we will do everything we can to support our teams at this time."
